Big Stone Parole Versus Probation
Minnesota uses several forms of community supervision. Probation is imposed by the sentencing court, often when it stays imposition or execution of a sentence under conditions. A person can leave a receiving county jail on probation without entering a Minnesota prison. For most people who serve an ordinary determinate prison term, the community phase is called supervised release. It is part of the executed sentence and is administered through the Minnesota Department of Corrections or another authorized supervision provider.
Parole is narrower. The Minnesota Supervised Release Board handles limited statutory groups, including certain life, indeterminate, certified-adult, and specified criminal-sexual-conduct sentences. It is not the routine release authority for every state prisoner. The sentencing judgment and offense date therefore come before any label.

Verify Big Stone Release Supervision
A current jail roster cannot answer the supervision question. Big Stone County does not operate a jail facility, and a released name may have disappeared from the actual receiving jail’s roster. The legal status must be traced through the Big Stone court file and the agency that supervises the sentence. Court records show legal authority, while the supervising agency confirms the current administrative assignment.

- Ask for the public supervision fields and verify any later transfer, warrant, revocation, or discharge with the responsible agency.
The DOC name search is prefix-based and can include conviction-name history, though the result displays the current DOC name. Newly sentenced people may take several business days to appear. A no-match is not proof that supervision ended. The person may have county probation, an interstate transfer, a recent entry delay, or a fully discharged DOC record.

The displayed agency status must be tied to the correct person and sentence before it is treated as proof of Big Stone County post-release supervision.
Big Stone Probation Office Split
Big Stone’s local supervision structure cannot be reduced to one office. An official DOC Western Probation document identifies DOC felony-level supervision for Big Stone, Grant, Stevens, Traverse, and Wilkin Counties through the Western structure. Morris and Moorhead offices are part of that route. The actual agent or reporting site can still depend on residence, case assignment, a contract, or interstate compact.
Western Probation describes adult gross-misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and juvenile services for the multi-county area. Its directory is an office contact, not a public person lookup. Give staff a name, case number when known, sentencing court, and the type of public fact sought. Do not request confidential reports when the goal is simply to confirm supervision.

Felony supervision questions should also follow the MN DOC Community Supervision route. The court sentence resolves which branch is relevant.
Big Stone Public Supervision Records
Minnesota Statutes section 13.84, subdivision 7, identifies public adult court-services data. The public fields can include the fact and location of probation, parole, or diversion; the supervised offense; start and end dates; duration; the supervising agency, unit, or person; conditions and the degree of compliance; and stated facts about certain arrest, detention, revocation, or supervision changes.
That statute does not make the whole file public. Specified progress reports, recommendations, private data, and other protected content can remain unavailable. A narrow request works best. Ask for the fact of supervision, its start and end dates, current agency or unit, supervised offense, and public discharge or revocation data. If the requested record is denied or redacted, the office should identify the governing basis.

Who Supervises Big Stone Releases?
The county name alone cannot identify the supervising office. Minnesota delivers supervision through DOC field services, Community Corrections Act systems, and County Probation Officer jurisdictions. A person may also move under the Interstate Compact. That compact lets authorized agencies transfer supervision between states, but the transfer does not end the sentence.
Begin with the Big Stone sentencing case. Next, identify the sentence type and current place of residence. Then use the corresponding DOC or Western Probation route. Calling the Supervised Release Board for an ordinary probation file will not resolve the issue, and assuming the person reports in Ortonville may send the inquiry to the wrong office.

Big Stone Violations and Fugitives
A violation does not always mean a new criminal conviction. It can involve an alleged breach of a supervision condition, followed by an agency response or court process. An absconder is a person alleged to be evading supervision. DOC describes its Active Fugitives channel as covering people serving the community portion who allegedly violated conditions and are evading authorities. It is not a list of everyone on Big Stone County supervision.

The Sheriff’s payment portal is not a warrant search. Payment also does not prove that a warrant was cleared or that a person was released. Confirm a warrant or revocation through the court and the responsible supervision agency. If immediate safety is at issue, use the appropriate emergency channel.
Note: A transfer, arrest, or hold may change physical custody without ending the underlying Big Stone County supervision term.
Big Stone Parole Board Records
The Minnesota Supervised Release Board became effective in 2024, but its work concerns limited sentence groups. It conducts an initial readiness review before the minimum term in qualifying cases and may set a projected release date or continue a matter with directives. Ordinary determinate-sentence prisoners generally follow supervised-release rules and the Public Viewer instead of waiting for a parole hearing.
The Board review schedule posts dated meetings, agendas, minutes, online viewing details, and recordings. It is updated regularly. Prior meeting material remains available for a limited period, described in the research as about 90 days, so an approved minute or annual report may be needed after an agenda leaves the page. No separate complete person-by-person decision search was verified.

Read the posted action in context. A continuation, projected date, grant, denial, modification, or rescission has a different effect, and section 244.05 does not supply one universal eligibility date.
Big Stone Supervision Discharge
Discharge is the formal end of supervision, not merely the end of routine reporting. A probation discharge may appear as a court entry or order. A DOC discharge may require the Public Viewer, a DOC record request, or another maintained agency record. If the public locator no longer returns the person, that absence alone does not establish the date or terms of discharge.
For a court copy, identify the Big Stone case number and request the probation-discharge order or relevant docket entry. For DOC history, provide the MNDOC number, full name, date range, and sentencing case when available. Ask separately for prison release to supervision and final discharge because they are different events.
Minnesota Haven may send notices about DOC community supervision, agent assignment, expiration of sentence, and other listed changes to eligible registrants. County-jail VINE is a different system.
